The Town is committed to motorist and pedestrian safety, and this additional camera system is designed to improve compliance with posted speed limits and detect vehicles that exceed those posted limits. Automated speed enforcement violations are civil in nature and carry a minimum $40 fine tiered to a maximum $425 fine (see below for details). There are no points assessed to any driver’s license for automated enforcement camera systems.

The fine escalation for speed monitoring systems under Maryland HB 182, effective October 1, 2025, is as follows:

MPH Over Posted Speed Limit (35 MPH)

Maximum Penalty

12–15 mph   $40

16–19 mph   $70

20–29 mph   $120

30–39 mph   $230

40+ mph       $425

These fines apply to violations recorded by automated speed cameras, replacing the previously fixed $40 maximum penalty.

The following location is where the new residential district automated speed enforcement camera system will be located:

NB Allentown Road near the intersection with Maxwell Drive.

The following location is where the new residential district automated speed enforcement camera system will be located, replacing the school zone automated speed enforcement camera at the same location:

SB Allentown Road near the intersection with Maxwell Drive.

This notice serves as the official public warning. The automated speed enforcement will be active as of 12:00 AM on April 11, 2026. The Town may imposed additional penalties for unpaid citations as permitted under law including:

Welcome to Morningside!

Nestled between Joint Andrew Air Force Base and Washington D.C., The Town of Morningside is the “Gateway to the Nation’s Capital”. With a population of 2,015 (Census 2010), the Town is known for its friendly people, events and its ideal location. Morningside has a Mayor and Town Council form of government. In addition, we operate our own Police, Code Enforcement, and Public Works Departments. The Town is also known for being the home of one of the busiest volunteer fire departments in Prince George’s County: Morningside VFD Station 827, servicing Morningside and adjacent communities.

There are many notable things about the Town to include its 3 years and running recognition with a “Banner Town” Status. Municipalities who are designated as Banner Cities/Towns are recognized among their peers as active participants in showcasing municipal government and how it works.

There are also events throughout the year and this provides an opportunity to interact with the employees, Mayor and Council.  Some events, but definitely not all, include Spring Clean Up Day, 4th of July Parade and Fireworks, National Night Out, Trunk-or-Treat, Senior Luncheons, and Breakfast with “Santa”. These are just some of the reasons our residents proudly call this great small Town, “HOME”.  The Town encourages all residents, businesses, and community members to monitor the calendar and participate in upcoming events.

Police Department

Town of Morningside Police Department is comprised of both sworn and civilian personnel who are both professional and proactive in their delivery of Police services to our community.
