Community Policing and Events

Morningside is an incorporated town in Prince George’s County that is sometimes referred to as “The Gateway to the Nation’s Capital” a reference to which we are most proud. Our Town is adjacent to several major thoroughfares such as Suitland Parkway and the Capital Beltway, and because of our proximity to the ever-expanding Joint Base Andrews and the nearby Federal Census Bureau, we often have dignitaries, diplomats, military, members of Congress and their staff, as well as the President of the United States travel through, all of which requires our small but very effective police force to be ever vigilant and in high demand.

But as important as these ephemeral duties and responsibilities are, at the heart and soul of our priorities are the eclectic residents of our community, both young and old, to whom we take our mandate to “Protect, Serve and Support” most importantly. Within our town’s boundaries we accommodate the Imagine Foundations Public Charter School and the Benjamin Foulois Creative and Performing Arts Academy, as well as Douglas Patterson Park that is operated and managed by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. Additionally we have one of the largest VFW posts in the entire country, and we are home to one of the busiest Volunteer Fire Departments in the county that has garnered national recognition for their service to the community.

All of our Morningside Police Officers are very much aware of the need to promote positive contact between themselves and the members of the neighborhood we serve so as to reinforce mutual trust and facilitate the exchange of information in the hope of building a more cohesive community. To that end rather than responding to crime only after it occurs, our officers are encouraged to proactively develop solutions to the immediate underlying conditions contributing to public safety. To realize this goal of building ties and working closely with members of our community one of our first steps is to make every effort to get to know our neighbors by listening carefully to their concerns and treating and interacting with everyone respectively in an effort to identify and solve problems.

Throughout the year our town sponsors many community events specifically designed to bring the citizens together in a social environment at which our police presence is evident. These events provide us the opportunity to come into direct contact with our residents and business owners to actively foster our accountability to and involvement with those that we are entrusted to serve. The public’s support for law enforcement increases and aids community policing by joining the citizens and officers in a common interest to fight crime, resulting in the police becoming more effective in fighting and preventing crime from information provided by our citizens. Morningside Community Policing

National Night Out: Police/Community Partnership
National Night Out on Crime is held on the first Tuesday of every August Nationwide, and is the biggest Crime Prevention event of the year designed to:

✓ Heighten Crime and Drug Prevention Awareness

✓ Generate Support For and Participation In Local Anti-Crime Efforts

✓ Strengthen the Bonds Between Neighborhoods and Police Enhancing the Bond

✓ Send A Message to Criminals Letting Them Know That Neighborhoods Are Organized and Fighting Back!

In Morningside, several locally owned businesses have joined various Law Enforcement Departments in showing their support in this collaborative effort.
Our Citizens are invited to lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors and Police Officers as we celebrate our community and police partnerships. Effective Crime Prevention begins with strong neighborhood and community relationships!

Morningside Community Policing Bike Patrols

Every Spring/Summer our officers are alternately scheduled for “Bicycle Duty” in lieu of their cruisers to patrol our neighborhood streets in an effort to increase their visibility and accessibility in coming into more direct contact with the residents and business owners in our community in anticipation of building stronger relationships.

“We Care” Program

This is a program designed to recurrently check on the welfare of our senior citizens.

It includes having a program in place for visiting them on Holidays and assisting, wherever possible, with everyday tasks of living.

It is particularly beneficial in facilitating volunteers for snow shoveling and grass cutting.

July 4th Parade/Family Fun Day Followed by Local Fireworks Display

The Fourth of July in Morningside has become renowned, county-wide, for our annual parade followed by an afternoon of outdoor family fun in celebration of our nation’s independence!

Then, in the evening, residents and visitors alike are treated to one of the most spectacular exhibitions of professional pyrotechnic splendor of any local community around that many have commented rivals the long-established traditional show just a few more miles “down the road”.

All of our officers are also on deck for this event!

School Visits/Career Days

With two primary schools in our jurisdiction we consider these invitations to be some of our most vital, essential and cherished occasions to open impressionable min to the possibility of a career in law enforcement.

It also presents us with an invaluable opportunity to impart constructive knowledge to our younger citizens and to possibly allay some of the anxiety that some of them might have, or to dispel any animosity they may have acquired toward our profession.

There never can be too many reasons to present a solid, moral individual with good character for the children to emulate and aspire to become, and the benefit runs both ways as for us, it offers a chance to build a long-lasting relationship with some of the future leaders of our communities.

We sincerely regard these requests to be an honor and a privilege to accept.

Family Fun Bingo

Several times a year this activity is offered for an attended by all ages thereby making it truly a “Family Fun Event”.

In addition to multiple bingo game winners, there are also door prizes that may be selected from a prize table (no cash prizes).

These events have become one of our community’s more popular and well-attended occasions thereby making them a most advisable means of networking with our citizens.

Spring Town Clean-Up & Low Cost Shot Clinic

Many of our residents have come to anticipate taking advantage of what has become a most-appreciated annual event in our town clean-up weekend where we offer an opportunity to clear out and spruce up those overflowing closets, basements, sheds, garages, yards, and everything in between!

We provide roll-off containers for household and yard waste and also a charity drop off location with donation receipts.

This year we also procured the services of a licensed veterinarian to provide basic vaccinations to domestic pets at reduced rates.

We believe providing our citizens with these value-added services is an excellent way to express our care and concern for the welfare of all!
